<p>                                                                                                                                                                                           <img src="http://www.integrativenutrition.com/sites/default/files/childhood_obesity1.jpg" height="165" alt="" width="250" />One of the major <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/health" target=_self>health</a> problems facing our country today is the epidemic of obesity. Unfortunately, experts on obesity are turning toward an unsustainable and potentially dangerous solution to this problem.  According to a recent <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/08/ED541EBDUQ.DTL">article</a> in the San Francisco Chronicle, citing the June issue of the medical journal <em>Obesity</em>, doctors are recommending a “minimally invasive weight loss surgery” to combat the obesity problem.</p>
<p>This is disappointing news; not only because the number of overweight children in the United States has tripled in the last 30 years.</p>
<p>Since <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/obesity" target=_self>obesity</a> has hit alarming rates, physicians are scrambling for a quick fix.  The solution is actually very simple: start in the early years and create a diet for your child that is full of whole foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.  Make sure they get physical activity everyday and diversify your meal choices.  Instead of white rice or other refined grains choose quinoa, bulgur, or buckwheat.  Processed foods that contain additives, like high fructose corn syrup, will only perpetuate the obesity problem in our country.</p>
<p>Remember that quick fix solutions do not generally result in long-term success. If you fix the problem at its source, you are more likely to create a lasting change. In this case, the diets of children in the US must be changed or an entire generation will remain at risk of diabetes, heart disease, and countless other problems. </p>

Many of my patients use lightweight dumbbells in their workouts and that&#8217;s great. But, it&#8217;s important to use them correctly in order to avoid injury. So, I&#8217;m happy to pass along an <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a> that outlines the proper use of dumbbells, offered by Karen Voight, the creator of a line of fitness DVDs, including “Sleek Essentials.”
<p /></p>
<ul>
<li>Grasp a 3- to 5-pound dumbbell in each hand and stand with your feet hip-width apart, toes facing forward. Bend your knees and sit back on your heels to avoid putting <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net" target=_self>stress</a> on your lower back. Begin with your elbows bent and tucked in to the sides of your body, palms facing forward.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Use your abdominal muscles to support and brace your spine as you simultaneously bring your left arm in front of you and your right arm behind you.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Pause when your dumbbells are at shoulder level and make sure your elbows do not “lock out.”</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Bend your arms and return to the start position. Repeat the exercise, this time extending your right arm to the front and your left arm to the back.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Continue to alternate arms for a total of 16 repetitions. Rest for 30 seconds and repeat for a second set.</li>
</ul>

And, since one in three children in the US is either overweight or obese, it&#8217;s apparent that getting enough exercise is becoming a national crisis. That said, <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a>, especially when it involves sports activities, should be engaged in with the utmost caution. And, not just for the middle-aged &#8220;weekend warrior,&#8221; but for children as well. In fact, here&#8217;s a shocking statistic regarding kids and the &#8220;great American pastime&#8221;: According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2008, nearly 200,000 children aged 14 and younger, were treated in hospitals, doctor&#8217;s offices and emergency rooms for baseball-related injuries.</p>
<p>Why do so many injuries occur? Well, for thing, young athletes today are taking on the kind of intense fitness regimen that can lead to overworked limbs, and overworked limbs, particularly arms overworked from repetitive throwing, can result in injury. In this case, it the old saying &#8220;it isn&#8217;t whether you win or lose but how you play the game,&#8221; couldn&#8217;t be more true and <em>truer still </em>is how you practice &#8220;pre-game.&#8221; Coaches and parents need to advise their young baseball players to not only practice proper form, but to avoid over-exertion. And, kids need to step up and let the coach or a parent know when they&#8217;ve had &#8220;enough&#8221; practice for one day.</p>
<p>The  American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends the following tips, which we, chiropractors, fully support:</p>
<ul>
<li> Always take time to warm up and stretch before and after play. Research studies have shown that cold muscles are more prone to injury, specifically:</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>If a child is pitching, he should concentrate on stretching his arm, shoulder and back muscles.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li> If a child is catching, the focus should be on the legs and back.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Children should not be encouraged to play through pain. It is important that they take breaks.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Limit the number of teams on which your child is playing in one season. Kids who play on more than one team are especially at risk for overuse injuries.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Wear a batting helmet at the plate, in the &#8220;on deck&#8221; circle waiting for your turn at bat, and during base running.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Coaches must teach and allow practice of proper sliding techniques before using a bag, including breakaway bases. Players younger than 10 should not be taught to slide.</li>
</ul>

There&#8217;s just no getting around it, our bodies are meant to move, and when we don&#8217;t let them (or in some cases &#8220;make them&#8221;), every system in our body suffers. Exercising is crucial to our overall well-being, and not just for physical <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/health" target=_self>health</a> and strength, but mental &#8220;power&#8221; as well. In fact, a new study, led by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, has found evidence that regular exercise speeds learning and improves blood flow to the brain.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure that if you already exercise you are aware that your thinking tends to become more clear and sharp after a good workout and cool down, even though you may have been unaware that by exercising you were actually increasing the volume of blood flowing to your motor cortex. The point is, exercise is clearly a &#8220;smart&#8221; thing to do. So, keep it up if already <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a>, and if you don&#8217;t, GET MOVING. But, see your chiropractor first to be sure you&#8217;re well-adjusted!</p>
<p>The findings are available in the journal <em>Neuroscience</em>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>I just read an interesting article in the health section of <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/24/health/24patient.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss">newyorktimes.com</a> about the &#8220;financial&#8221; benefits of protecting your joints. As a chiropractor, when it comes to the <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/health" target=_self>health</a> of the joints of the musculoskeletal system, protecting the joints from injury and unnecessary wear and tear are key to preventing painful and often debilitating problems as our body ages. As I mentioned in past articles, degenerative <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/arthritis" target=_self>arthritis</a> can be appreciably decreased and even avoided with proper education, exercise, and treatment. However, I have found that, unfortunately, it&#8217;s hard for people to &#8220;get motivated&#8221; now to do something about potential problems. But, adding a financial incentive may just do the trick!
<p /> Did you know that more than 400,000 people a year have one or more hips or knees replaced? And, did you know that the cost for a new hip or knee is $30,000 to $40,000? Even if you have insurance, your out-of-pocket expenses can still be quite substantial, especially when you include the cost of days off from work.
<p /> The article offered several &#8220;preventative measures&#8221; that might help your joints to stay healthy longer. And, with the exception of its suggestion that glucosamine and chondroitin &#8220;probably are of limited benefit,&#8221; I am in agreement with the article&#8217;s joint protection suggestions.</p>
<ul>
<li>control your weight</li>
<li>stay active in &#8220;low impact&#8221; <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a> and sports</li>
<li>try to avoid injury</li>
<li>get fit</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><div class='posterous_autopost'>As a chiropractor who believes in the human body&#39;s ability to heal itself, often with the aid of natural, non-invasive, drug-free chiropractic treatment, I am always dismayed, but never surprised, at some of the pernicious claims and tenacious effrontery of drug companies when it comes to pain killers, in general, and the &quot;treatment&quot; of a number of conditions that don&#39;t get any better with drugs or are made worse by them. And, as a chiropractor who has helped hundreds of headache sufferers not only get temporary, but permanent relief, when I read about a drug study for yet another pain med that will likely keep headache sufferers numbed to their pain, but in the process numb to the rest of their life as well, I feel like shouting from the rooftops: &quot;Try <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net" target=_self>chiropractic</a> first!&quot; But, today, when I read about a study, sponsored by Merck (who also makes the product), I really felt compelled to say that this particular study is shamefully playing to the fears of migraine sufferers when, in fact, the drug itself only offers &quot;less severity&quot; at best when it comes to a migraine headache.
<p />The study, conducted by Dr. X. Henry Hu of Merck &amp; Co.and colleagues, found that one in five migraine sufferers had &quot;avoided&quot; a work-related commitment because they were afraid of getting a migraine, while 27 percent reported canceling a work commitment for this reason, and round 28 percent said they had avoided or canceled social commitments due to fear of migraines.
<p /> I have treated many patients who told me how much they&#39;d &quot;feared&quot; the onset of a migraine and limited their activities in life because of that fear, so I do understand how devastating the fear of migraines can be. And, yet, the only &quot;solution&quot; this study offered?
<p />This study is &quot;important,&quot; said Dr. Hu, because the unpredictability of migraines could contribute to people&#39;s anxiety and fear about them and early treatment with migraine drugs called triptans can help reduce headache severity. &quot;Because of the lack of predictability of future migraine attacks, migraine sufferers may benefit from increased education on the importance of keeping medications available at all times,&quot; he and his colleagues concluded.
<p />My conclusion? If you suffer from migraines, give your chiropractor a call today!

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p></p><p>As a chiropractor in Santa Clara, I commonly hear this question asked by those considering <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net" target=_self>chiropractic</a> care: &#8220;If I start going to a chiropractor, will I have to always go?&#8221; I often wonder why this particular question doesn&#8217;t come up for someone who goes to a general medical practitioner. Think about it: How strange would it be if someone asked, &#8220;If I go to Dr. Smith for a general checkup and he gives me a prescription for a temporary condition I might have, will I have to see him &#8216;forever&#8217;?&#8221; The answer is &#8220;Of course not.&#8221; You don&#8217;t have to see Dr. Smith again, but you probably will for your yearly or bi-annual checkup and, naturally, in between if you&#8217;re not feeling well.</p>
<p>The same is true when you go to see a chiropractor. Most of the time, individuals go to see a chiropractor because they&#8217;re in pain (not feeling well). After the chiropractor has treated them and gotten them out of pain (a &#8216;prescription,&#8217; so to speak, for a temporary condition), the chiropractor will probably suggest maintenance care (a general checkup even when you&#8217;re feeling okay). The only difference is that a chiropractor will likely suggest that you come in monthly. Why? Because chiropractors are all about preventative care whenever possible. Maintenance care is like a &#8220;tune up&#8221; that not only helps your body to maintain the &#8220;crisis&#8221; treatment you received when you were in pain and keeps you healthier and stronger so that you can avoid future injuries, but during your maintenance visit your chiropractor can make sure that you don&#8217;t have a &#8220;temporary condition&#8221; that needs to be corrected before it becomes &#8220;crisis&#8221; treatment.</p>
<p>Cumulative effects of awkward sitting posture, bad work habits, incorrect lifting, lack of regular <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a>, and other unhealthy lifestyle-related influences can produce pain, often excruciating pain, in your back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees, etc. Getting &#8220;checked out&#8221; and &#8220;readjusted&#8221; on a regular basis keeps small conditions from becoming big problems.</p>
<p>So, to the question &#8220;If I start doing to a chiropractor, will I need to go &#8220;forever&#8221;? The answer is &#8220;No, but you may want to, for your <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/health" target=_self>health</a>&#8216;s sake!&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>ENJOY A MORE SATISFYING SEX LIFE!</strong> Okay, now that I&#8217;ve gotten your attention, let&#8217;s talk about your health. As a chiropractor I advise my patients everyday about the need to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially as they age. An individual&#8217;s &#8220;invincible&#8221; 20s give way to a few <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/health" target=_self>health</a> challenges in their 30s, and then almost exponentially an <em>un</em>healthy lifestyle starts showing up frequently in the organ and musculoskeletal systems of the body. But, even given an armful of reasons to get and stay healthy, a lot of people still continue along the slippery slope of bad health choices. So, here&#8217;s a reason that will, no doubt, be put on the top of the heap, for getting and staying healthy: A new study making &#8220;breaking news&#8221; today shows that people who are in good health are nearly twice as likely to be interested in sex in middle and older age and also more likely to report having a busy and satisfying sex life.</p>
<p>Sexual activity has long been associated with health benefits and longevity, but these reseachers say that this is the first study to look at how general health affects the <em>quality</em> of sex as people age and to calculate what they call a person&#8217;s &#8220;sexually-active life expectancy.&#8221;</p>
<p>The researchers gathered information from more than 6,000 men and women in midlife and later life. The researchers estimated that at age 55, the average sexually active life expectancy is 15 years for men and 10.6 years for women. But, here&#8217;s the kicker. Researcher Stacy Tessler Lindau, an associate professor at the University of Chicago wrote in the journal <em>BMJ</em>, &#8220;Although the period is longer for men, they lose more years of sexually-active life as a result of poor health than women.&#8221;</p>
<p>The study found both men and women in very good health were 1.5 to 1.8 times more likely to report an interest in sex than those in poorer health. And, among those who were sexually active, good health was not only associated with more frequent sex (once or more weekly) in men, but with a <em>good-quality</em> sex life in men and women.</p>
<p>So, if you haven&#8217;t been interested in developing a healthy lifestyle, but you&#8217;re still interested in a healthy sex life, you may want to reevaluate your current diet, increase the amount of <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/exercise" target=_self>exercise</a> you get on a regular basis, learn to deal effectively with your life <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net" target=_self>stress</a>es, and start drinking plenty of water every day. Because now you have one more good reason to get healthy and stay that way.</p>

<p>As a chiropractor, I know from experience that chiropractic treatment can help to reduce the pain experienced by many arthritis sufferers. Getting the musculoskeletal system in good alignment and helping to increase mobility in arthritic joints can do wonders to decrease an arthritis sufferer&#8217;s current pain and also to help to slow the degenerative changes that may add to future arthritic problems. In addition to <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net" target=_self>chiropractic</a> treatment, there are other alternative, drug free approaches that can help to reduce inflammation, neutralize free radicals, and sustain bone mass. Below is an article I just read on&nbsp;<a href="http://4-arthritis-info.com/alternative-treatments-arthritis/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CurrentArthritisNewsAndResearch+%28Current+Arthritis+News+and+Research%29"> Current Arthritis News and Research</a> that I found extremely useful. <p>Many arthritis sufferers have tried unusual and rather nasty &lsquo;cures&rsquo; for their disease like enduring bee-stings or covering themselves in cow-manure. The benefits must have been rather less spectacular than the cures or else everyone else would have done the same.</p>
<p>One arthritis cure suggests that half a glass of raw potato juice followed by chewing two or three juniper berries will do the trick! While this may be so, many doctors and scientists researching arthritis have studied the benefits of taking <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/nutrition" target=_self>nutrition</a>al substances like vitamins. In fact, studies have shown that people with arthritis are mostly deficient in the B group of vitamins, though whether this is due to the disease or to the fact that taking aspirin depletes the body&rsquo;s stores of this vitamin is not clear.</p>
<p>Vitamin C, E and beta-carotenes are powerful antioxidants that help to neutralize free radicals. These oxygen-reactive free radical molecules are thought to contribute significantly to disease and tissue damage. It has been found that cells from damaged knee cartilage can release great amounts of free radicals. In fact, studies have shown that those who have a high Vitamin C intake have a two-thirds reduction in the risk of further damage to their knees. Well-known scientist Dr. Linus Pauling recommends 18 grams of V-C per day as an arthritis preventative measure.</p>
<p>Osteoarthritis can cause thinning of the bones, and so can prednisone, often given to treat it. It makes sense then to increase the amount of Vitamin D and calcium, both of which are bone-builders. As far back as 1974, British scientists found that lack of vitamin D contributed to bone fractures in the elderly with arthritis. Lack of sunlight and an unhealthy diet both contributed to the lack. The recommended daily dose of Vitamin D is 400 IU or 600 IU if for those over the age of 60. A daily dose of 1200 IU is the limit as this vitamin is toxic if too much is taken.</p>
<p>Vitamin E is also an antioxidant; working in a similar way to vitamin C. Studies in Germany have proven that it can help to reduce pain. Good sources of this vitamin can be found in wheat germ, sunflower seed, corn oil, legumes and whole grains.</p>
<p>While some people swear by the <a href="http://www.santaclarachiropractic.net/category/arthritis" target=_self>arthritis</a> cure that their copper bracelet brought, there is no scientific link to copper as being an aid to arthritis. In fact the opposite is true. Those with RA often have higher levels of copper in their blood. Too much copper can make you sick.</p>
<p>Selenium deficiency can cause a particular type of arthritis called Kashin-Bek disease, but it is more common where the soil is deficient in selenium, though sufferers of RA have less in their blood than others. Fish, organ meats, whole grains, nuts and beans will provide selenium.</p>
<p>Zinc may help reduce pain, stiffness and swelling. Some trials showed this was true, though others gave conflicting results. Oysters, cheese and tofu are all good sources of zinc.</p>
